Youth Services Assistant (part-time)
The Florham Park Public Library is seeking an energetic and creative Youth Services Assistant to work alongside the Youth Services Librarian and circulation team to provide excellent customer service and programming to Florham Parkers of every age. This is an ideal position for a stay-at-home parent looking to get back into the workforce, a former or retired educator looking to make a positive impact in a community that truly values its library, or a library student looking to gain hands-on children’s experience! The Youth Services Assistant provides one storytime per week to children and their caregiver and works regular hours at both the circulation desk and the youth services desk.
This is an hourly position at $17.00 per hour.
Preferred Schedule
Monday 3:00pm – 9:00pm
Tuesday 9:00am-3:00pm
Thursday 9:00am-3:00pm
This role includes Saturday hours, roughly one Saturday every seven weeks, 10:00am-4:00pm
Essential Functions of the Job
- Collection Maintenance and Development
- Assist in the organization and maintenance of youth collections, including books, media, and digital resources.
- Help prepare library materials for circulation, including labeling, covering, and processing new items.
- Participate in weeding and inventory projects as directed by the Youth Services Librarian or Circulation Supervisor.
- Provide input on new materials to enhance the collection based on patron interests and trends.
- Program Support and Implementation
- Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting youth programs such as storytimes, craft activities, and special events.
- Lead or co-lead programs as assigned, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Help set up and clean up program spaces, ensuring they are ready for the next activity.
- Space and Environment Management
- Ensure that the children’s area is kept neat, tidy, and inviting at all times.
- Regularly organize and straighten books, toys, and other materials in the children’s section.
- Monitor and replenish supplies for programs and activities, ensuring that all materials are well-stocked and available as needed.
- Clean and sanitize toys, surfaces, and equipment regularly to maintain a safe and healthy environment for young patrons.
- Patron Services
- Offer friendly and effective customer service to youth, parents, and caregivers, assisting them with finding materials, using library resources, and answering general inquiries.
- Guide patrons in the use of library technology, including computers, tablets, and digital resources.
- Promote library programs and services to young patrons and their families.
- Stays on top of youth reading and publishing trends and provides reader’s advisory service as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma (some college preferred)
- Experience working with children
- Familiarity with computers and internet
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proactive customer service orientation, ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public, and ability to maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with other members of the library staff
- Enthusiasm for libraries and an ability to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret library policies and procedures
- Willingness to develop skills and library knowledge through on-the-job training, classes, or online tutorials
- Able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds

Library Assistant (part-time)
The Florham Park Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to join our team! This position offers entry-level experience working in a public Library environment, with opportunities to learn specialized tasks within our institution. Part-time Library Assistants help patrons at the circulation desk, shelve and organize library materials, assist with book processing, and take on special projects as needed. FPPL is a vibrant, busy hub for the community, and we have a welcoming and friendly team. Join us!

Responsibilities
- Check out and check in library materials
- Pack and unpack materials in daily inter-library loan delivery
- Answer patron inquiries by phone, email, or in person
- Perform Library opening and closing procedures
- Assist patrons with locating information and resources using the Library catalog, website, and databases
- Assist with weeding and other collection maintenance tasks
- Processes and links newly-acquired Library materials
- Keeps the Library, circulation desk, and workroom neat and tidy
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Enthusiasm for public libraries and their mission!
- Proactive customer service orientation
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public
- Organization and attention to detail
- Willingness to develop skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and continuing education efforts
- Team player
- Able to bend, lift, move, or carry up to 30 pounds
Experience and Training
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Some college preferred
- Customer service experience
- Savvy with technology; particularly email, internet, Google Suite, and Microsoft Windows
- Previous library experience a plus
